Introduction: Your Base Camp for Lake Lure & Chimney Rock Adventures
Tucked away in the foothills of western North Carolina, Wheat Creek Outpost in Mill Spring is the ideal home base for a weekend filled with mountain adventure and small-town charm. Located just a scenic 20- to 25-minute drive from both Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure, our luxury glamping retreat puts you within easy reach of hiking, lake views, local dining, and relaxation.
It’s important to note that Lake Lure is currently undergoing major restoration following the impact of Hurricane Helene in September 2024, which caused significant flooding and damage to the dam and surrounding infrastructure. The town temporarily drew down the lake to remove silt and debris and to begin critical repairs. You can find updates and detailed information directly from the Town of Lake Lure’s official website.
The town of Lake Lure has announced a target date of late spring 2026 for full public reopening and refilling of the lake.
While the lake itself is not yet open for boating or swimming, the communities of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock remain very much open, filled with local shops, restaurants, cafés, and small businesses that welcome visitors and deeply appreciate ongoing support as the area rebuilds. Strolling through Chimney Rock Village, grabbing lunch with a view of the gorge, or shopping from local artisans are all wonderful ways to experience the region and contribute to its recovery.
This weekend itinerary uses Wheat Creek Outpost as your base camp for adventure and connection, with easy day trip ideas, scenic hikes, and relaxing moments in the foothills. Whether you’re climbing to the top of Chimney Rock for sweeping views, exploring charming mountain towns, or unwinding by the fire pit under the stars, your western North Carolina getaway begins right here.

They also have a market with coffee and lots of great local goods. Enjoy coffee on the back porch for a great view. You’ll often find live music and fun community events happening here, so be sure to check their Facebook page for the latest schedule before you go.

Head to Chimney Rock State Park, and take the hike up to the scenic overlook, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. Be sure to check ahead for ticket availability or reservation requirements before you go, the park can get busy, especially on weekends and during peak seasons.

Pick up a few souvenirs or browse the local art and sculptures around town. Be sure to stop by Bubba O’Leary’s General Store, and say hello to Bubba the Lab, the store’s beloved mascot! It’s a fantastic spot to find quality outdoor clothing, gifts, and locally made goods.
Lunch

Stop by Grey Hawk Bar & Gardens, at 111 Resort Lane for a delicious meal in a beautiful garden setting. This place is amazing and one of our favorites! It offers a relaxed atmosphere with brunch, dinner, craft drinks, and live music. Sunday brunch is also amazing, and hit up the Hatchling Coffee house for a caffeine boost!
Afternoon on Lake Lure
Make a stop at Fae Nectar, a charming and imaginative meadery and event space located at 2984 Memorial Highway in Lake Lure. Sip on craft mead made with local honey, enjoy light bites, and soak in the whimsical, fairy-inspired atmosphere that makes this spot a true hidden gem in the Blue Ridge foothills.
Another great indoor option — especially on a rainy day or when you’re ready for a break from hiking — is a stop at the Candy Cabin, Their massive candy and soda selection is a treat for all ages, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try your hand at axe throwing or take on one of their escape room challenges for a little extra excitement.
Dinner in Lake Lure & Chimney Rock
Option 1:Head right into the heart of Chimney Rock Village and grab dinner at Chimney Rock Smokehouse. The rooftop view of Chimney Rock is awesome, especially at sunset. Everything on the menu is delish. Do yourself a favor and try the, the Hair of the Dog cocktail — and if you like a little kick, add a dash of Tabasco. It's not for everyone, but we love it!
Option 2 - If you’re in the mood for something laid-back, head to The Lake House, This cozy spot sits right on the water and serves up delicious food with unbeatable lake views. It’s the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a good meal, and soak in those peaceful Lake Lure vibes.
Option 3 – Our Top Pick! For an unforgettable upscale dining experience, reserve a table at Appalachia Restaurant, Set against the stunning backdrop of mountain and lake views, Appalachia combines elevated Southern-inspired cuisine, craft cocktails, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Arrive a little early to enjoy the back deck, which winds down toward the waterfront and offers some of the best views in Lake Lure.
Our favorites include the Blackened Shrimp and the Pork Chop. Yum!! Don’t miss their seasonal craft cocktails, the bartenders are always creating something new and delicious to complement the view.
After dinner, head back to Wheat Creek Outpost, settle by the fire pit, and let the mountain stars complete your perfect evening.
